By mixing The Grudge and Saw, young director makes a statement about Unit 731

Director Youngmin Kim, graduate student at university of Southern California of Cinematic Arts, hasproposed a thesis film project, titled Room 731, that resurfaces the horrible past of the infamous unit 731, the Japanese torture camp of World War II. unit 731 was based in the Pingfang district of Harbin, the largest city in the Japanese puppet state of Manchuko (now known as northeast China). It was a cover biological and chemical warfare research and development unit of the Imperial Japanese Army that undertook lethal human experiments and responsible for some of the most notorious war crimes carried out by Japanese personnel.

Room 731 is a mysterious, supernatural film that is a mix between The Grudge and Saw, where a Chinese teenage girl with amnesia wake ups in what appears to be an abandoned jail. With such a striking plot and
talented production crew members, all that is needed to make this thesis film project go into production is the perfectcasting for the main character and, what all productions need, funding. In the heart of Los Angeles and Hollywood, where there is unlimited talented actors and actresses, Director Youngmin Kim is stumped to find it difficult to cast for the lead role of Wei. Although there has been an abundance of Caucasian actors and actresses, it has been found difficult to find good and talented Asian talent.

Also, the budget for Room 731 is set at $33,000. Director Youngmin Kim has turned to social media fundraising campaign, Kickstarter, to reach the financial goal of $17,000 and the production crew is hoping to secure the rest through private investors. Room 731 is set to be filmed in December 2013 and will be submitted to major worldwide festivals, including Cannes and Sundance. This film is very unique in that it combines horror with drama, and is meant to entertain and enlighten. This is a great opportunity to get involved with a very creative and important project!
