A project to transport sightseers by cable car to the Hollywood sign — the most sought-after tourist spot in L.A. — is being initiated.

The LA Times reported July 10th that Hollywood studio Warner Bros. has invested $100 million to initiate the “Hollywood Skyway Project,” which will connect its head office located in Burbank, L.A. to the Hollywood sign.

Warner Bros. stated that “the installation of cable cars will reduce the parking problems in the Hollywood sign vicinity, as well as enabling tourists to see the sign up close,” and that “the Hollywood Skyway will contribute greatly to tourism and the film industry.”

If the gondola-shaped cable cars are installed, a one-way trip to the Hollywood sign from the Burbank office will take just 6 minutes. Up until now, the only way to directly approach the sign has been to hike for an extended amount of time through the trail at Griffith Park, Los Feliz. Meanwhile, the city of Los Angeles, headed by Mayor Eric Garcetti, is also considering a separate plan to connect Union Station in downtown Los Angeles to the Dodgers Stadium, home to the LA Dodgers, by cable car.
