Audi taps small car market with A1

Audi Korea plans to strengthen the penetration into the premium small car market in Korea, following the launch of its new Audi A1 models on Thursday in Seoul.

The facelifted A1 models debuted here are the three-door A1 30 TDI and the five-door A1 Sportback 30 TDI, according to the company.

Audi’s premium small cars target younger customers, who long for an Audi badge at relatively cheap prices. The price tags on the new A1 range from 32.7 million won ($29,380) to 37.2 million won, depending on trims and other options, the company said.

“The company aims to sell 500 units of the new A1 hatchback given the remaining six-month period,’’ Audi Korea CEO Johannes Thammer said in a media event, adding that sales would surpass the 1,000-unit mark next year.

Audi Korea expected that annual sales of premium compact vehicles in Korea would likely grow to 10,000 units by 2018. The company targets a 15-18 percent market share in the new segment.

The new A1 30 is capable of going from 0 to 100 kilometers per hour in 9.4 seconds and reaching a maximum speed of 200 kilometers per hour. It can run 16.1 kilometers on a liter of diesel fuel, the company said.
