President Park Geun-hye met with the head of the World Health Organization over how to contain the MERS virus that has sparked the public scare across South Korea, Cheong Wa Dae said Thursday.
The presidential office did not immediately provide details of their meeting.
Presidential spokesman Min Kyung-wook said before the meeting that Park was expected to discuss with WHO Director-General Margaret Chan on South Korea’s quarantine measures against Middle East Respiratory Syndrome and how to boost cooperation with the U.N. health agency.
Chan was in Seoul to attend an international conference of nurses.
The meeting came hours after a 75-year-old patient died from the viral respiratory disease, the 24th MERS-related death in the country.
South Korea reported only one new infection case on Friday — the lowest daily rate in recent days — which officials said may indicate the outbreak is on the wane. (Yonhap)
