KYCC’s Prevention Education unit will host a May 21 town hall on the legalization of marijuana and its impact on the community. Many residents of Koreatown, Pico-Union and Westlake have raised questions and concerns about marijuana dispensaries and why they continue to open in their neighborhoods.

To address community needs, the town hall–“Is Marijuana Affecting My Community?”—will be held at John H. Liechty Middle School from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m.

Catherine Branson, Prevention Fellow with the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) Center for Substance Abuse Prevention, will deliver a presentation on the impact of the legalization of recreational marijuana in the state of Colorado.

In addition, Rob Wilcox, the Director of Community Engagement and Outreach at the Los Angeles City Attorney’s office, will speak about the intent and challenges of Proposition D and how the community can work with the L.A.P.D. and the neighborhood prosecutor’s office to address illegal dispensaries in their community.

KYCC is working in conjunction with the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, Substance Abuse Prevention and Control Division, in implementing an environmental prevention effort that is aimed at addressing the use of alcohol and marijuana among youth and young adults. KYCC’s Prevention Education unit provides community members with the necessary resources to advocate for themselves and the health and safety of their communities.

KYCC (Koreatown Youth and Community Center) was established in 1975 to support a growing population of at-risk Korean American youth in Los Angeles. Today, KYCC is one of the largest multiservice organizations in Koreatown. With over 75 employees, most of whom are bilingual in Spanish or Korean, KYCC serves thousands of clients at our six locations and across Los Angeles County.
