Nickelodeon’s new musical comedy series “Make It Pop” premiered on April 6, 2015. “Make It Pop” is a K-pop inspired show that features a modern pop twist and an EDM beat.
The show is co-created by Thomas W. Lynch and Nick Cannon where the show is centered on an upcoming, real-life group, XO-IQ. The show features three girls that meet as roommates and then become bandmates, with the help of a fellow classmate.
Korean-American YouTube star Megan Lee is one of the lead casts, along with Louriza Tronco, Erika Tham and Dale Whibley. The singer-actor Megan Lee plays Sun Hi, a Korean girl who is social media crazy and dreams of one day becoming a famous star with her strong passion for dancing and singing.
Kpop Buddy and K-pop bloggers Nutty Nomads had a chance to meet with Megan Lee to talk about her new show on Nickelodeon at Paramount Studios.
Nutty Nomads: What drew you to the role of Sun-hi in ‘Make It Pop’?
Megan Lee: Definitely the fact that she has such a bubbly personality. She is a huge dreamer, born leader and just really loud and confident in herself which drew me because she’s so unique. There aren’t many characters like that out there. As we shot the season, I became more like Sun-hi in a way when it comes to her clumsiness. I was such a dork on-set to the point where it’s kind of embarrassing!
NN: What would you say to the K-pop fans who are a little concerned about how K-pop will be portrayed in the show?
ML: I’m a huge fan of K-pop and I totally understand the fact that it is a little sensitive when it is portrayed in North American television and the industry. I understand how fans might be worried that they might make it look different than what it actually is. I’m not a producer so I don’t have much to say, but I did try my best to represent the inspiration the best as possible. It is a K-pop “inspired” show, not a K-pop show, where the producers take the fun parts of K-pop and just sprinkle it on the show. We don’t want to say that whatever in the show is what K-pop is all about. For example, when it comes to the outfits and hairstyles, a part of it is inspired from K-pop and also when Sun-hi always poses with a peace sign when she takes photos.
NN: If you can pick, who would you want as a guest star on the show?
ML: Since it is a K-pop inspired show, it would definitely be awesome to have an actual K-pop idol to guest star in the show. If I have to choose specifically, I’m close to Eric Nam and he has such a fun and bubbly personality. I really think he would be a perfect character to add to the show!
