Kakao Story is top social media in Korea: survey

Daum Kakao’s Kakao Story is the favorite social network service among South Koreans, beating global rivals such as Facebook and Twitter, according to the latest poll released Tuesday. The poll of 9,381 online users was conducted last year by local research firm Hankook Research.

Among 6,700 social media users, or 70.5 percent of the total respondents, Kakao Story topped the list with 51.8 percent, followed by Facebook (28.5 percent) and South Korea’s largest portal site Naver’s Band (23.6 percent). Blogs (10.9 percent) and Twitter (8.1 percent) rounded out the top five.

Users in the 30-40 age range prefer closed social networks such as Kakao Story and Naver’s Band while people in their teens and twenties opt for open social media such as Facebook and Twitter.

More than half of the male users said they use the four social network services except for Kakao Story while 56.9 percent of female respondents said they use Kakao Story.

Most of the respondents (70.5 percent) said they used the services to share their personal lives while 11.9 percent used them to share music and video.

Over the past month, 70.5 percent of all respondents used social media, up from 39.8 percent in 2011.
