NVIDIA CEO Declares Chip Order Can Be Ordered To Companies Other Than TSMC

Jensen Huang, CEO of Nvidia, a leading artificial intelligence (AI) chip company, said he may entrust AI chip production to companies other than Taiwan’s TSMC.

According to Bloomberg News, CEO Hwang made the remarks at a tech conference hosted by Goldman Sachs Group at the Palace Hotel in San Francisco, California on the 11th (local time).

Nvidia relies heavily on TSMC for its most important chip production because the company is overwhelmingly the best in the field, he said.

However, experts say that relying solely on TSMC for chip procurement due to geopolitical tensions is a risk to stable production. China sees Taiwan, where TSMC is located, as part of China, and the ruling government of Taiwan is independent and close to the United States. As a result, there is a possibility that China could invade Taiwan, which would prevent Nvidia from receiving chips from TSMC.

In a related development, Hwang said most of the company’s technologies are being developed by themselves, allowing Nvidia to switch orders to other suppliers. However, he added that such changes would likely degrade the quality of the chips.

“The agility and the ability to respond to our needs is amazing, so we use them, but we can use other companies if we need to,” he said.

Hwang did not say what other companies were saying. However, experts interpreted that Samsung may be the only company that can produce Nvidia’s latest chips because TSMC and Samsung Electronics are the only companies capable of producing the latest chips.
