20kg of overwork in a year after joining the company became a hot topic in China

As the story of a Chinese woman gaining 20kg in the first year of joining the company has been reported, the problem of “overweight” is emerging locally.

According to the Hong Kong media South China Morning Post (SCMP), Ouyang Wenjing, a 24-year-old woman from Guangdong Province, China, said on the local social network service (SNS) “Xiao Hongxu” that she gained weight from 60kg to 80kg within a year of joining the company.

He cited overtime, irregular shifts, and excessive consumption of delivery food as the reasons for his weight gain.

Eventually, Ouyang said he lost 6kg in a month with a balanced diet with vegetables, grains and protein after leaving the company in June. He is currently working as a diet influencer with 41,000 followers. As Ouyang’s story became known, there was a series of denunciation about the so-called “over-obesity” among local female netizens.

A 33-year-old woman who works for a technology company in Shanghai confessed to Xiaohongshu that she had gained 3kg in two months due to work stress, saying, “I have no will left in my life because I have used all my will power for work.”

China is currently legally required to work 40 hours a week, but in reality, the “996” work culture, which works six days a week from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., is known to be prevalent.

Late dinners, overeating, and sleep deprivation can cause overwork, said Dr. Zhuo Xiaosha, a Chinese medical authority. “We need to protect our health through regular meals, vegetable intake, and exercise.”
