Facebook parent Meta Platforms (hereinafter referred to as Meta) announced on the 12th (local time) that it has renewed its license agreement with Universal Music Group (UMG), the world’s largest music content company.
The contract will allow users to use UMG’s content on Meta’s social media (SNS) such as Facebook and Instagram for years to come.
In addition, Meta Horizon, a metaverse platform, has been expanded to utilize new SNS threads released in July last year and short video (short-form) videos on WhatsApp.
Meta has been using UMG’s music on its platforms, including Facebook, Instagram and Oculus, under a licensing agreement with UMG since 2017, when it was at Facebook. Details of the deal were not known.
However, the two companies will continue to cooperate to solve the problem of unauthorized AI-generated content that can affect artists and composers for copyright protection.
“The partnership with UMG will allow us to work together in new ways on WhatsApp and others,” said Tamara Hribnak, Meta’s vice president of music and content business development.
“The partnership will be multi-faceted and, above all, will cover unauthorized artificial intelligence (AI) generated content that can affect artists and composers,” he added.
UMG is a company that manages the contents of Taylor Swift, BTS (BTS), Justin Bieber, and Drake.
In February, they agreed to delete AI music generated without permission in three months after struggling with negotiations due to differences in their positions on TikTok and content usage fees.
