OpenAI and Financial Times have partnered in content usage and AI development

Open AI was sued by the New York Times (NYT) in December last year, claiming that its copyright was infringed, and the trial is currently underway. The New York Times claims that OpenAI is responsible for compensating billions of dollars in damages related to unauthorized copying and use of content.

Perhaps for this reason, OpenAI, a developer of generative artificial intelligence (AI) chatGPT, and the British daily Financial Times (FT) signed a partnership to use content and develop AI functions.

“This contract will help OpenAI strengthen ChatGPT using FT’s digital content,” the two companies said in a statement on Monday (local time), adding that they will work together to develop new AI products and functions for FT readers. They did not specify the terms of the contract.

OpenAI has also signed similar contracts with U.S.-based news agency AP, German media Axel Springer, French media Le Monde and Spanish media Prisa Media. It is the first time that it has signed a contract with a British media outlet.

“Through our partnership with FT, we will provide real-time rich ChatGPT experiences to users around the world,” said OpenAI COO.

FT Group CEO John Reading said, “We look forward to this partnership to produce a variety of practical results that combine news sources and AI.”

The deal will allow OpenAI’s ChatGPT to answer users’ questions in a way that summarizes Financial Times articles.

Earlier this year, FT became an enterprise ChatGPT customer so that all employees could use ChatGPT, OpenAI added.

OpenAI is also reportedly discussing a content use contract with leading U.S. media such as CNN, Fox, and Time.

When Open AI signs contracts with media companies, many people can get a variety of sources. However, copyright issues also arise. Open AI will have to work hard to ensure that it does not become a legal issue by creating strong rules or signing with media so that it does not infringe on copyright.
