Musk made the remarks in an interview with Norwegian sovereign wealth fund CEO Nikolai Tangen on his social networking service (SNS) X (formerly Twitter).
“If we define AGI (Universal Artificial Intelligence) as an AI that is smarter than the smartest human, it will probably be possible next year, for example in less than two years,” Musk said.
Musk’s projection is far ahead of that of NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang, an AI chip leader, who said “within five years, we will see the same level of AGI as humans.”
He also pointed out that the current power grid is not meeting the increased demand due to the development of AI technology, saying, “The limitation of AI power generation is the supply of transformers and securing power.”
Musk went on to expect his AI start-up, xAI, “to complete training on the next version of Grok in May.”
Groc is an AI chatbot such as ChatGPT, developed by the AI startup xAI, founded by Musk in July last year, based on the large-scale language model (LLM) Groc-1 and introduced in December the same year.
He also predicted that “China will not lag behind the United States” amid fierce competition over AI technology development.
Musk also revealed plans to explore the moon and Mars of SpaceX, a private space company he leads.
Musk envisions building a self-sufficient city on Mars by 2050 to complete human migration.
First, he said, “I’m going to take people to the moon in five years.”
He was also confident that “the unmanned spacecraft Starship will reach Mars within five years, and mankind will be able to land on Mars for the first time in seven years.”
This is four to five years behind Musk’s initial announcement that he could land humans on Mars in 2026.
SpaceX’s Starship, a spacecraft developed with the aim of exploring the moon and Mars, succeeded in reaching orbit on its third Earth orbit test flight on the 14th of last month, but it was evaluated to have been half successful as it disintegrated during the fall.
Musk previously announced on the 5th that he would unveil Tesla’s self-driving robotaxi (unmanned taxi) in August.
He did not elaborate on the robo-taxi, only writing on his X account that “Tesla robo-taxi will be released on August 8.” Musk has been emphasizing over the past few years a robo-taxi project in which Tesla vehicles use their own self-driving technology to drive autonomously and pick up passengers for a fee like a taxi.
