According to Reuters on the 19th, TSMC said in a statement that Ryu will step down next year. TSMC’s board of directors said it has recommended Wei Gao as its CEO and vice chairman.
Chairman Ryu and CEO Wei have led TSMC since TSMC founder Jang Joong-moo stepped down from the management front in June 2018.
Ryu joined TSMC in 1993 after working for Intel and AT&T. Since then, he has elevated TSMC to the position of a “semiconductor empire” in the global semiconductor industry. He is a graduate of UC Berkeley Electrical Science.
Wei, who will become the next president, received a Ph.D. in electrical engineering from Yale University. After serving as Singapore’s Chartered Semiconductor, he joined TSMC in 1998.
