Preorders for Kia’s K5 sedan top 6,000

Kia Motors Corp., South Korea’s second-largest carmaker, said Tuesday that preorders for the latest version of the K5 midsize sedan have exceeded 6,000 in just two weeks since its launch.

The new K5 was first unveiled on June 22 with two different models and five different engine types available to customers. Its official sale and delivery are expected to start in mid-July.

Since its launch, Kia Motors said it has received over 6,000 preorders, more than twice the pace of monthly sales for its existing K5 model.

The latest K5 seems to be appealing to younger customers with its enhanced convenience and tech-oriented features, the company said.

Preorders placed by those in their 20s and 30s accounted for about 45 percent of the total, 5 percentage points higher than the ratio among customers for the existing model, it said.

Nearly four out of five customers opted to buy those in the Prestige trim or higher. Kia Motors explained that the wireless charging system for mobile phones, the first of its kind available in Korea, might be appealing to customers. (Yonhap)
