WHO experts say schools not source of MERS infection

Experts from the World Health Organization researching the outbreak of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome confirmed Wednesday that all transmissions so far have been limited to hospitals, advising the country to reopen schools closed as a precautionary measure.

A joint investigation team of South Korean and WHO officials said schools have not been linked to any transmission of the viral disease.

“Evidence collected so far suggests that the outbreak and the spread of the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome in South Korea are similar to the outbreak and spread of MERS through hospitals in the Middle East,” the team said.

The team’s advice comes as more than 1,800 kindergartens and schools have been temporarily shut down, some since last week. (Yonhap)
