Controversy over the unauthorized use of Korean drama portrait rights at a Chinese mart

The portrait rights of actors Park Bo-gum and IU, who appeared in the recently popular Netflix series ” When Life Gives You Tangerines,” are being used without permission in China, sparking controversy.

Seo Kyung-duk, a professor at Sungshin Women’s University, said through a social network service on the 14th, “We used pictures of Yang Gwan-sik (Park Bo-gum) and Ae-soon (IU) in a mart in Hebei Province, China without permission.”

He added, “In particular, Gwan-sik was using their portrait rights at will, using the scene in the drama where he was selling cabbage for Ae-soon.”

Professor Seo also pointed out that more portrait rights were being used in various product sections, along with explanations such as “Make pea rice for Ae-soon” and “Is this right?”

“After watching illegally and stealing in China, we are using the actors’ portrait rights at will,” he said. “Netflix is not officially serviced, but the fact that this continues to happen is like a public admission that we are secretly watching.”

“It is time for the Chinese authorities to step up,” he said, adding, “We must take measures to prevent this from happening again by intensively cracking down on illegal activities of our people.”
