Police searching sender of dead newborn in parcel

Police said on Friday they are tracking a woman in her 30s who allegedly sent a dead body of a newborn through a parcel service to a home in Naju, South Jeolla Province.

The body of the female baby with raggedly cut umbilical cord was delivered through a postal service to the home of a 60-year-old resident on Thursday afternoon, the police said.

Police believe that the parcel had been sent by the resident’s 34-year-old daughter, based on the analysis of closed circuit television footage of a post office in Seoul. The footage shows the woman carrying the box and sealing it repeatedly with tape.

Police said the woman came to Seoul four or five years ago and has since cut contact with the family. They said the woman is thought to have financial problems.

They said based on condition of the baby’s body, the woman may have delivered her without any medical help.

The body was found wrapped in a black tracksuit inside the box, along with a letter that asked for the baby to be taken care of so that she can rest in peace.
