Seoul City will host the general conference of the International Bar Association gathering some 6,000 legal professionals from around the world in 2019, officials said Tuesday.
Seoul will be the fourth Asian city following Tokyo, New Delhi and Singapore to organize the event.
The city has been working to bring the conference here since 2011 in cooperation with the Korean Bar Association.
The IBA, established in 1947, is the world’s leading organization of international legal practitioners, bar associations and law societies. It aims to develop international law reform and shape the future of the legal profession throughout the world with more than 55,000 individual lawyers and over 190 bar associations and law societies globally, according to its website.
The hosting of the IBA conference will add to the list of large-scale conferences being held in Seoul with over 3,000 anticipated participants to 28 by the year 2022.
The city explained that by hosting the 28 conferences, it would induce 300 billion won worth of consumer spending, which is equivalent to exporting some 12,500 midsized cars overseas.
