First newspaper in Italy to be produced with 100% artificial intelligence (AI) published

Il Foglio, a moderate-conservative central daily newspaper founded in 1996, announced on the 18th that AI has issued a special issue called Ilfoglio AI created by participating in the entire process.

“It is an experiment to show how AI technology affects our way of doing business and our daily lives,” said Claudio Cherasa, editor-in-chief, adding, “It will be published every Tuesday to Friday for a month.”

Ilpolio AI was built in a four-page board format. It has been sold on stands and online along with existing paper newspapers since that day.

The biggest feature of this newspaper is that every step of the production process was done by AI. AI performed everything, including writing articles, selecting titles, citations, and summaries, and human reporters were only responsible for entering questions into AI.

The special issue has a total of 22 articles and three editorials. On its front page, an article criticizing the contradictory behavior of figures in Italy who support former U.S. President Donald Trump was posted.

In addition, a column titled “Putin’s Ten Betrayals” dealt with the case of Russian President Vladimir Putin breaking promises and breaking agreements over the past two decades.

On the second page, there was an article on the Italian economy, and on the fourth page of opinion, there was an AI-generated reader letter. One reader asked the question, “Will AI make humans obsolete in the future?” and AI responded, “AI is a great innovation, but I don’t know how to order coffee without getting sugar wrong yet.”

“The article was systematic, concise and clear. There were no grammatical errors,” the British daily Guardian said. “However, none of the articles directly cited sources.”

With the development of Generative AI technology, major media companies around the world are also actively using AI to produce news.

The New York Times (NYT) uses the AI tool “Echo” to write titles, generate interview questions, and write social media (SNS) articles.

Since 2014, AP has been automatically generating news related to corporate performance using ‘Wordsmith’, and the Washington Post has introduced an AI chatbot to provide a summary of existing articles to readers’ questions.
