Disney’s Live-Action Adaptations… From The Little Mermaid to Snow White – A Ruin of the Original?

The upcoming live-action adaptation of Snow White has become the center of controversy. In the original, Snow White is depicted as a white woman with skin “as white as snow,” but the live-action version features a Latina actress, leading to criticism that the casting does not align with the original image. Similar debates arose with The Little Mermaid; despite the lead actress’s exceptional performance, many viewers felt she did not match the traditional image of Ariel. Disney stated that the casting choice was intended to break racial barriers, but the controversy remains heated.

There is also growing fatigue surrounding Disney’s live-action adaptations in general. Over the past few years, Disney has released numerous live-action remakes, prompting mixed reactions from fans. Many netizens argue that these adaptations lack the charm of the originals. Previous Disney remakes such as The Little Mermaid, Mulan, and The Lion King received harsh criticism, and the upcoming Snow White seems unlikely to escape similar backlash. The issue extends beyond mere casting choices—many believe that Disney is compromising core elements of the originals in its attempt to modernize the stories. Had the company introduced a new character instead of altering an existing one, the controversy might not have escalated to this extent. While the intention to take a fresh approach is commendable, opinions remain divided—some praise it as a “new interpretation,” while others denounce it as “ruining the original.”

Cancellation of the Premiere?

As the release date approaches, Disney has canceled the UK premiere of Snow White. Reports suggest that this decision was made in response to public backlash. Disney officially stated, “Recognizing the negative sentiment surrounding Snow White, we have decided to forgo a London premiere and replace it with a press conference.” They also acknowledged that they are making efforts to minimize controversial questions directed at lead actress Rachel Zegler. Some members of the public have mockingly referred to her as “Black Snow White due to her darker complexion. Additionally, criticism has arisen over the film’s title, as the phrase “Seven Dwarfs” has been removed. Since the dwarfs play a crucial role in the story, some argue that Disney is overemphasizing Snow White while sidelining other important characters. Others have questioned why Snow White’s race was changed while the dwarfs remained the same, seeing it as an inconsistent approach.

Maintaining the essence of the original work helps foster familiarity and connection among viewers. Changing core elements of a classic fairy tale—is it truly beneficial for the actors cast in the roles? While reflecting modern values is necessary, drastically altering a beloved work’s identity may not be the right approach. Fans of the original will inevitably feel disconnected, and Disney’s lack of consideration for this sentiment remains a significant issue.
