The Turkey Trade Ministry’s Advertising Commission recently fined Adidas 550,59 lira.
This is because they used pig skin, which is taboo in Islam, in sneakers and did not properly notify it.
Adidas introduced the “SambaOG” sneakers on its Turkey online sales site and explained only that it used natural leather.
It did not specify that pig skin was used.
The Advertising Commission said, “For products that use materials that are contrary to the overall religious sentiment of society, the fact should be clearly stated in the advertisement.”
In response, Adidas updated its product description on its website.
Meanwhile, more than 90% of Turkey’s population is Muslim.
In Islam, pigs are considered profane animals, and eating pork or using leather is taboo.
