‘Amusement park study’ emerges as new trend among young people in China and Hong Kong

Hong Kong’s South China Morning Post (SCMP) reported on the 11th that “an exotic culture that uses amusement parks as learning spaces is spreading.”

According to reports, the phenomenon began in March last year when students studying at Disneyland in Shanghai and Disneyland in Hong Kong appeared on social media. An annual pass of HK$4,998 is a valuable investment in securing a place to study regularly, a Hong Kong university student said.

In Beijing, Universal Studios has emerged as a “study shrine.” As the facility is located outside, it has to travel for one to two hours each way, but young people are visiting. A graduate student in Shanghai said, “The fireworks that are held every night are the big attraction of studying.”

The amusement park ‘students’ are sharing recommended places such as quiet restaurants and rest areas through SNS. They said, “The amusement park is effective for simple learning such as memorizing English vocabulary.”

However, criticism is being raised. One netizen complained of inconvenience, saying, “It is hard for ordinary customers to find a seat because they occupy the table all day long.”
