Seven words from Korean culture, including “dalgona” and “hyung,” were posted in the English dictionary published by Oxford University Press.
According to the Oxford English Dictionary website today, a new word update in December last year included “noraebang,” “maknae,” “jigae,” “tteokbokki,” and “pansori” in the dictionary.
It is the first time in more than three years that words from Korean have been listed in the Oxford English Dictionary since September 2021, which includes 26 words such as “K-drama,” “hallyu,” “mukbang,” and “debak.”
The Oxford English Dictionary is an authoritative English-speaking dictionary first published in 1884, which now operates as an online platform to search immediately and is regularly updated every three months.
The Korean-related words included this time have cultural meanings such as Korean food and titles, and there are many related to “K-culture,” which has been very popular in the English language.
In the future, the number of Korean-related words published in the Oxford English Dictionary is expected to increase steadily, and next year, we are considering posting “Haenyeo,” “Ajumma,” and “Bingsu.”
