Eon, a large retailer that employs the most part-time workers in Japan, is considering raising its hourly wage for part-time workers by an average of 7% next spring.
According to a report by the Nihon Keizai Shimbun on the 30th, the average hourly wage for part-time workers in Ion is currently 1,170 yen, so a 7% increase would increase it by 82 yen.
Eon raised its hourly wage for part-time workers by 7% again this year. Eon’s number of part-time workers is 420,000, an increase of 20,000 from the previous year, which is about 2% of Japan’s non-regular workers.
Eon labor costs are expected to be about 40 billion yen due to an increase in the hourly wage of part-time workers, but the company plans to respond to the increase in costs through digitalization and efficient manpower allocation.
Nikkei predicted, “The movement to raise wages for non-regular workers is likely to spread in wage negotiations in the spring of 2025 due to the large influence of ions.”
