The Bashar al-Assad family’s 53-year-old rule came to an end.
On the 8th (local time), Reuters reported that Russian local media quoted Kremlin sources as saying that President al-Assad had fled to Moscow, Russia.
Earlier, Reuters said based on the aircraft route tracking site Flightradar 24, an aircraft took off from Damascus Airport when it was reported that Damascus had fallen to Syrian rebels.
The Syrian civil war began on March 15, 2011, when the regime harshly suppressed anti-government protesters demanding the resignation of the regime amid turmoil such as the Arab Spring and economic crisis. Since then, it has been 13 years with interests entangled by competitive intervention by Syrian government forces, rebels, Islamic extremists, Kurds, and foreign powers such as the United States, Russia, Iran and Turkiye.
Al-Assad seized power in a coup and took over power from his father Hafez Al-Assad, who had been in power for a long time between 1971 and 2000, and the father and son have ruled with an iron fist for 53 years. Al-Assad is suspected of indiscriminately killing civilians, especially after the outbreak of civil war, using chemical weapons.
With the end of the civil war, the international community is welcoming and calling for stability and peace.
