The Chinese government has imposed regulations on the web drama, saying that the portrayal of the “handsome male lead” undermines the image of its own entrepreneurs

According to the Global Times, a Chinese state-run media, the National Kwangjeon Administration, a Chinese broadcasting regulatory body, recently announced production guidelines for popular web dramas.

The Chinese authorities said, “We should not distort or damage the image of the Chinese entrepreneurial group by convincingly packaging absurd stories.”

“We should be wary of the atmosphere of worshipping and encouraging marriage with powerful people or chaebol families,” he said. “It is necessary to strictly exclude content that promotes false values of life to succeed without effort or to become rich overnight.”

“When producing a drama, you should value the principle of realism,” he said, adding, “I urge you to actively use the stories of Chinese companies that are drawing attention historically and at the time.”

The authorities also pointed out the climate in which drama production companies are engaged in the business of views with the words “chaebol family” or “CEO” in their titles. They said they will supervise the number of such web dramas to reduce their volume and improve their quality.

In China, the “chaebol” genre mainly contains stories of relationships between tall and handsome chaebol men and ordinary women under conditions. It is similar to the so-called “white martan prince” story.

Chinese netizens responded to the news, saying, “It’s too much regulation of the creation,” and “It still requires management and supervision.”
