Japanese electronics company Casio leaks customer data after ransomware attack

It has been revealed that Casio, a Japanese electronics company, was attacked by ransomware and stole customer data. Hackers even accessed sensitive data such as Casio employees, customers, business partners, interview information, and Casio technology information.

According to TechCrunch and other foreign media on the 14th (local time), the hacker group “Underground” released some of Casio’s leaked information on the dark web. Underground is a new hacker group that was first known to the world through hacking that was carried out in June last year.

Underground released some samples claiming to have leaked more than 200gb of data, including Casio’s legal documents, salary information, and personal information of Casio employees from the dark web. This is interpreted as a strategy to demand more money from Casio.

The identity of the underground is not known, but according to Microsoft, the underground is linked to the Russian hacker group Storm-0978. The BlackBerry researchers also said that Storm-0978 conducts cyberattacks and other digital infiltrations for the Russian government.

Casio admitted to being hit by a cyberattack for the first time on the 7th. At that time, the entire company’s system was disrupted, but Casio did not reveal the nature of the incident. Eventually, it was confirmed that he was the victim of a ransomware attack.

Casio confirmed that the hackers also had access to information about some of the clients. However, it has not given details such as what type of information the hackers had access to or how many customers have been affected so far.

“The entire scope of damage caused by the ransomware is still under investigation,” a Casio official said. “Some Casio systems are not yet available. Please pay special attention as phishing e-mails may be sent by exploiting leaked personal information.”
