Neuralink, a brain neuroscience start-up founded by Tesla CEO Elon Musk, has been reported to be developing an experimental device that helps the visually impaired recover their eyesight. According to a Reuters report on the 18th local time, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has designated a device called “Blindsight,” which is being developed by Neuralink, as an “innovative device.”
By using chips and electrical signals connected to the brain, Nutalink’s Blind Site is a project that promotes vision recovery for the visually impaired. The blind site, which has been designated as an “innovative device,” will receive development support from the FDA in the future.
Musk announced this on his X (formerly Twitter) and was confident that “using blind sites will allow people who have lost their eyes and optic nerves to see.”
“If the visual cortex is intact, even those who were born blind can see,” he said, adding that it will look like low-resolution graphics in the early stages of development, but gradually it will be better than natural vision.
However, it is not known when Neuralink will enter clinical trials for blind sites.
