Controversy is brewing over the artificial intelligence (AI) model that appeared in McDonald’s commercials in Japan.

On the 20th, local media such as Japanese business magazine Toyogeizai reported that advertisements for McDonald’s Japan, which recently featured artificial intelligence (AI) models, are being criticized.

The advertising video in question was posted on the official McDonald’s X (X, formerly Twitter) account in Japan on the 17th.

The 15-second commercial video clip features about 10 female models promoting McDonald’s fries. The problem appears at the end of the commercial. The model throwing the fries in the air had six fingers. Some pointed out that the ring finger is too short compared to the average finger.

In addition, a number of awkward spots were caught by Internet users during advertisements, such as overly large fists and excessively thin and short arms, even though they were female models.

Netizens are criticizing, such as “it’s awkward,” “it’s not fun, it’s not sincere,” and “I don’t know exactly who the target layer is.”

Regarding the reason why people are uncomfortable with artificial intelligence (AI) models, Toyogeizai said, “Compared to the actual situation, people feel ‘unnatural’ and ‘unfamiliar’ and they are disgusted because they are close to real people.”

“As the advertisement was distributed only to X (formerly Twitter), it seems to be a test of how artificial intelligence (AI) advertisements are accepted. I would have expected some criticism, but I would not have expected it to be this high,” he said.
