The exact location of Plato’s burial was confirmed through ancient Roman papyrus scrolls, the Italian daily Rastampa reported.

Plato’s exact location of his tomb was revealed when he announced the interim results of a ‘Greek School’ research project conducted with the National Research Council at the National Library of Naples, said Graziano Ranochia, a professor of papyrus studies at the University of Pisa in Italy.

Professor Ranocchia said that after deciphering the Heraculaneum scroll, Plato’s tomb was found to be in a private space in the garden of Academia, which he founded in Athens, Greece.

Archeo News has so far only known that Plato was buried in Académie, but now it has the meaning of knowing the exact location.

This scroll refers to more than 1,800 papyrus documents found in Herculaneum, an ancient Roman city in the Gulf of Naples that disappeared along with Pompeii in the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD.

The location of Plato’s tomb was recorded in a history book written by Phyllodemus, an Epicurus philosopher and poet who lived in Heraculaneum, according to Professor Ranocchia.

These documents were very difficult to interpret because there was a high risk of being crushed the moment you tried to open the scroll by burning or blackening the ash.

Artificial intelligence (AI) was the source of the researchers’ long-cherished agony and long-cherished dream. The research team led by Professor Ranocchia said it discovered 1,000 new words using AI, adding that it found 30 percent more words than when it was last decoded 30 years ago. The research, which started three years ago, is expected to be completed by 2026.

With the development of AI, the pace of research, which has been delayed by human limits, is accelerating. Starting with AI finding the exact location of Plato’s tomb, we hope that AI will help various research fields.
