The reason for his resignation is reportedly “violations and shortcomings.” Local media reported that the ruling Communist Party’s Central Committee approved the resignation of President Tuong, saying, “I resigned from my position after feeling responsible for the party, the country, and the people.” President Tuong has been sitting on the post of president, which became vacant after then-President Nguyen Xuan Phuk stepped down in January last year to take responsibility for the bribery case. In March of the same year, the Vietnamese National Assembly nominated him as president. Vietnam operates a collective leadership system in which 12 to 14 people decide policies, with party secretary general (general of the state affairs), president (diplomacy and defense), prime minister (administration), and chairman of the National Assembly (legislation) ranking first to fourth. President Tuong is the closest aide to Nguyen Phu Trong (79), the chief secretary of the country’s top power, and led the campaign to eradicate corruption that he emphasizes. Among these, no specific reason has been revealed, but rumors are being raised that the resignation is related to bribery. President Tuong’s term of office lasted until 2026.
