LG Electronics (066570) announced on the 18th that it will introduce transparent antennas for next-generation vehicles in cooperation with global automobile glass company Saint-Gobain Securit.
Transparent antenna is a transparent film type antenna applied to glass. LG Electronics has developed two types of antennas, one for attachment and the other for insertion, which are modularized to be applied to various glass and car designs in addition to the Sainte-Go-Bang Securit.
Transparent antennas are attracting attention as new communication technology solutions in the automobile market that is converting to future mobility. This is because cars are transforming into private spaces where high-tech technologies are concentrated, and a communication environment that can send and receive large amounts of data in real time is required. Unlike conventional antennas, transparent antennas, which are applied to glass, can be attached to various glass surfaces of vehicles. Through this, it is possible to support various formats such as 5G, satellite communication, and GPS, and provide seamless connection to increased communication volume.
While developing transparent antennas, LG Electronics acquired more than 80 patents including design technology that makes antenna patterns transparent and electrode material technology. It also improved the product’s completeness by establishing a process of applying Saint-Gobain Securit and transparent antennas to glass.
LG Electronics plans to expand its telecommunication parts business by making inroads into the automotive antenna market with innovative transparent antennas. According to its own estimate based on market research firm Strategy Analytics, LG Electronics ranked first in the telematics market for automotive communication modules (23.8 percent) as of the third quarter of this year.
LG Electronics is planning to introduce transparent antenna products to customers of finished cars at CES 2024, the world’s largest consumer electronics and information device exhibition, which will be held in Las Vegas from January 9 next year.
Eun Seok-hyun, vice president of LG Electronics’ VS business division, said, “The transparent antenna, which was completed through strategic collaboration with Saint-Gobain Securit, is a next-generation technology cluster that has been recognized for its differentiated communication performance through verification through actual vehicles,” adding, “We will continue to lead the market in telematics and other battlefield fields by leading new technologies such as transparent antennas.”
