Hyundai Motor Group announced on the 4th that Hyundai Motor’s Ioniq 5 and Kia Sportage have been selected as the “Top Safety Pick Plus” (TSP+), the highest grade in the crash evaluation by the National Highway Safety Insurance Association (IIHS).

IIHS is a non-profit organization founded in 1959 that comprehensively evaluates collision stability and collision prevention performance of vehicles on the U.S. market each year.

Vehicles with the highest safety are rated TSP+, and vehicles with good performance are rated TSP.

To achieve a TSP+ rating, you must achieve the highest rating of ‘Excellence’ in a total of 4 crash safety item evaluations, including ▲ Driver Small Overlapping ▲ Passenger Small Overlapping ▲ Passenger Small Overlapping ▲ Front Crash ▲ Side Crash.

In addition, a rating of “excellent” or higher in the day and night forward collision prevention system test (vehicle and pedestrian) and a headlamp rating of “excellent” or higher in the overall trim of the vehicle. The IIHS crash evaluation results add significance in that they have passed stronger evaluations since this year, such as raising the evaluation criteria for preventing side collisions and pedestrian collisions and applying stricter headlamp evaluation criteria.

The object used for the side collision evaluation became heavier from 1,497kg to 1,896kg, and the speed of the collision also increased from 49.8km per hour to 59.5km. This means that shock energy has increased by 82%.

In addition, a night test has been added to the evaluation of pedestrian collision prevention. Both TSP and TSP+ must also be rated above ‘good’ for the overall trim.

In February this year, Hyundai Motor Group obtained TSP+ ratings based on enhanced evaluation criteria, including ▲ Genesis G90 ▲ Hyundai’s Palisades ▲ Kia Telluride in August, Genesis ▲ GV60 ▲ GV70 ▲ GV70 ▲ GV70 electrified models ▲ GV80 ▲ Hyundai’s Ioniq 6 and Genesis ▲ G80 ▲ G80 electrified models in October.

“We put customer safety as our top priority in developing all vehicles,” a Hyundai Motor Group official said. “We will continue to do our best to provide a high level of safety for both drivers and pedestrians.”
