South Korean sci-fi thriller “Snowpiercer” is being shown in 250 movie theaters around North America starting last week, which is an increase of more than 30 times the original eight, the movie’s local distributor stated.
The English-language debut film by director Bong Joon-ho opened in eight North American theaters, following a series of openings in 11 countries around the world, including France, China, Taiwan, Japan and Italy, since last October. North America is the world’s largest movie market.
The number of North American theaters screening the movie has since risen sharply and will increase to 250 on Friday, July 4, “thanks to favorable reviews from influential U.S. news media, including The New York Times,” CJ E&M said.
“The movie will then be shown in major U.S. theaters as it adopted a roll-out method of gradually increasing the number of screening theaters based on sales records.”
The New York Post also raved about Korean actress Ko Ah-sung, who plays the daughter of Song Kang-ho in the film, with other five rising young actresses on a special article titled, “The girls of summer,” which was issued on June 14.
Korean-American actress Kim Yoon-jin, who is currently shooting in Los Angeles ABC’s TV series “Mistresses” Season 2, also showed support in promoting the film by talking about it with her colleagues and staff when the movie’s ad appeared on Weekly Magazine. She invited a few of her close staff members to then go see the movie at the CGV Cinemas in Los Angeles as they were curious and interested as she spoke about the movie.
Based on the French graphic novel “Le Transperceneige,” the film depicts inter-class struggles among the world’s last-remaining inhabitants aboard a perpetually moving train.
“Snowpiercer” brought together an international cast featuring South Korean film star Song Kang-ho, Chris Evans, Tilda Swinton, John Hurt, Jamie Bell and Ed Harris.
