US President Joe Biden’s planned visit to Jordan was canceled on the occasion of his visit to Israel.
According to Reuters and other foreign media on the 18th (local time), Jordan’s Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi said he was canceling the U.S.-Egyptian and Palestinian summits scheduled in Jordan.
Safadi told Al Jazeera that “there is no use in saying anything but to stop the war now.”
This seems to be related to allegations that hundreds of casualties were caused by airstrikes on Gaza hospitals.
Initially, President Biden was scheduled to visit Israel and Amman in Jordan on that day.
After reaffirming U.S. support in Israel, President Biden moved to Amman and met with Jordanian King Abdullah II, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, and Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas to ask for efforts to prevent an expansion.
In a related development, a White House official said, “President Biden canceled his visit to Jordan after consulting with the Jordanian royal family,” according to Reuters.
As a result, President Biden’s planned meeting in Jordan with King Abdullah II, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas was also canceled.
President Biden expressed his deepest sympathy for the innocent lives lost in the Gaza hospital explosion and wished the injured well, according to a White House official.
