Television, once a major pillar of the media market, is now losing ground in the media market. As times have changed, the form and role of TV have changed a lot. An exhibition will be held at Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP) to see how TV has changed from the early days of invention to the days when it enjoyed its heyday as an expensive home appliance loved by people.
The <TELE + VISION Tomorrow’s Memory> exhibition, part of the DDP collection series, is an exhibition that shows the changing appearance of TV and allows us to think about how TV has affected our lives as a media, and is available until May 31, 2023
The exhibition consists of a total of four themes: The Birth of New Media, TV: Symbol of Wealth, TV miniaturization, popularization, and everydayization, and TV Modern Design. Since the world’s first BBC broadcast using mechanical TV began in 1929, 57 real TV and digital content have filled the exhibition hall, ranging from commercialized vacuum-tube black-and-white TVs to TVs that proposed new concepts of wall hangings.
<New Media Birth> TV models born 200 years ago when TV was considered an invention are displayed.
<TV: Symbol of Wealth> tells the story of TV being added to the “Necessity List” as the beginning of commercial broadcasting and consumer life that changed through World War II. The TV at this time is reminiscent of high-end furniture in the form of a wooden cabinet.
<Tv’s miniaturization, popularization, and dailyization> introduces transistor (semiconductor device that amplifies electric switches) technology, and color TVs and portable small TVs appear as industrial technologies such as antennas, ultra-short wave (VHF) reception, and batteries develop. It shows a noticeably different TV design as new technologies are applied.
Finally, in <TV’s Modern Design>, you can see TV that shows the times well, from flying plate TVs that reflect the space boom that occurred around the world when Apollo 11 succeeded in landing on the moon in 1969, to character TVs with famous characters applied to channels and volume control displays.
The exhibition sheds light on the various ways of viewing television as a theme and the discourse on viewing behavior. In the past, the appearance of television has changed the way people perceive the world. Television, an audio-visual medium, still plays an important role in communication. This exhibition offers a glimpse of the development history of TV, which has developed into a tool of communication, beyond just showing.
At Design Dulle-gil, one of the exhibition halls, visitors can interview aesthetics experts in various fields, Professor Geumbitnaeum Hongik University, Art Center Curator Lee Soo-young, former vice president of LG Electronics Hwang Sung-gul, and former vice president of Samsung Electronics Jung Kook-hyun.
Interviews by four experts tell the story of the audience from various perspectives related to TV.
Lee Kyung-don, CEO of the Seoul Design Foundation, who hosts the exhibition, said, “I hope it will be an opportunity to think about what TVs will look like in the future, which have been gradually attracting attention since the past.”
